Slice of Life Comedy presents the 5 Hour Energy Comedy Showcase tomorrow night at the PULP featuring comedian Joe Zimmerman.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $5, which includes a year membership to the Pulp.
Zimmerman is an Asheville favorite. After watching him headline at the LAB in May and feature for Jarrod Harris last month, I can honestly say paying $5 to watch Zimmerman is a hell of a deal. Zimmerman has spent the week opening up for comedy superstar Maria Bamford.
A little bit more about Zimmerman from his bio:
After being named Charlotte’s 2006 Comedian of the Year by Creative Loafing Magazine, Joe Zimmerman began touring the country doing what he loves – that is, driving long distances while listening to self-help audiobooks.
Joe has quickly become known at the national level for his likable, goofy personality and clean, universally-accessible material. In 2007 he was named Stand-Out Stand-Up at the Asheville Comedy festival, and in 2009 Rooftop Comedy nominated him for the Golden Shingle Award, which is given to the most outstanding rising stars in comedy. 2011 saw Joe make the move to New York City, advance to the semifinals of the Laughing Skull Festival, place in the San Francisco Comedy Competition, showcase as one of Comedy Central’s Comics to Watch and make his debut on The Bob & Tom Show. He writes a popular blog (found on his website, ZimmermanComedy.com), Tweets at @JoeZimmerman and can be heard regularly on SiriusXM and Pandora.
When Joe is not on the road as a solo act, he tours alongside Andy Sandford, Dave Stone and TJ Young as the Beards of Comedy. One of the most highly requested stand-up tours in the country, the Beards have released two albums; their latest, Cardio Mix, in 2011 with Comedy Central Records.
Here are some clips of Zimmerman performing:
Slice of Life will be raffling off prizes all night, which include a pair tickets to see Doug Stanhope (8/9) and Neon Trees (8/7) at the Orange Peel and several gift cards from The Local Joint, a Fairview family owned restaurant. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Mariposa DR Foundation. A little about the foundation from the website’s bio:
The mariposa (butterfly) is a universal symbol representing transition, freedom and peace. In the Dominican Republic, it was the code name given to our nation’s heroines, the Mirabal sisters who fought social injustice and gave their lives for freedom. The Mirabal sisters or “Las Mariposas,” have become, not just national heroines, but international symbols. In 1999, United Nations declared November 25th, the day of their murder, as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Our mission is inspired by the Millennium Development Goals set out by the United Nations. These goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing the child mortality rate, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development. Achieving these goals is dependent upon the education and empowerment of women and young girls.
Also joining Zimmerman on stage will be comedians Greg Brown, Cary Goff, Cody Hughes, Peter Smith-McDowell, Tom Emmons, Jason Farr, Allie Steinhoff, Ben Atkins, Charlie Grey, Jaysun Webb, and host Comedian Kelly Row.
