Woody’s Pizza & Hoagies

Sometimes you can’t judge a book by its cover. Don’t judge Woody’s Pizza & Hoagies by its cover.   When you first walk into Woody’s you might think to yourself you’ve landed yourself at grandma’s house. With pink booths and putting green carpet, the only thing missing is grandma’s plastic slip covers. I personally think if they drilled a few holes in the floor, they could add a putt putt course in the restaurant, because the green is already installed.   But again don’t judge Woody’s by its cover. I don’t even have to get to Woody’s food to like it because they often have insane drink specials like $7.75 Greenman pitchers and 75 cent drafts on Sundays of different beers.     Not only is the booze moderately priced but so is the food. A large 16″ pizza  starts at just $9.99 and those that have the WNC Insider card get 50% off pizza at Woody’s ten times throughout the year. This past Saturday we took down a large pizza with ham and pineapple and a calzone.       As you can see from the pictures above the portions are huge. The pizza was pretty solid with a nice ratio of sauce to crust. The calzone was packed with mozzarella and ricotta, so if you are not a huge cheese fan you might want to ask them to go light on the cheese. The above meal feed two people for two days which is a damn good deal and the final tab was much cheaper than the chains in town.   Woody’s may of not put much thought into the decor but the food, cheap booze, and prices will keep me coming back.   On a side note Woody’s appears to be baseball champions of the world….....

Mamacita’s Mexican Taqueria.

There is no question in my mind, which burrito shop in Asheville has the best burrito in town. Behold the mother ship of all burrito palaces, Mamacitas Mexican Taqueria.     I chowed down on a Pork Shoulder burrito (stuffed with pork shoulder, sweet potatoes, black beans, cheese, jalapeños, lettuce, sour cream, and pico de gallo) after Downtown After Five last Friday. The mashed sweet potatoes provide a sweet alternative to traditional rice. Busting at the seams with a cornucopia of goodness this bad boy of a burrito is also the biggest burrito in town as far as I know.     Mamacita’s is a little bit pricier than its counterparts but the extra dollar or two is so worth it. Mamacita’s recently expanded into the old Mo Daddy’s location to open up Mamacita’s Baja Kitchen, which according to the website offers a “coastal inspired menu featuring fresh ceviche, lobster enchiladas, ensenada-style fish tacos, soft-shell crab tacos, as well as traditional Mexican classics like mole poblano, carnitas, and sopes all made from scratch in house.”   Has anyone tried Baja Kitchen yet?  ...

Never Blue Hendersonville

Tonight Chef Jesse Roque of Never Blue in Hendersonville takes on Chef Nate Allen of Knife & Fork in Spruce Pine in the WNC Chefs Challenge. But last Wednesday I had the opportunity to dine at the Never Blue for my girlfriend’s birthday.   Never Blue has always been a favorite of ours due to the out of world desserts and cheap booze, including $15 sangria pitchers every Friday and Saturday.   We usually start out with the Ch’dings (crispy duck wings, drenched in signature thai cashew peanut potion served with a lime ginger sauce and fresh celery) but unfortunately we had to settle with Chings (chicken wings served in the same sauce) because they were out of them on Wednesday. The Ch’dings are a Never Blue staple and should be your number one choice if you get lost in the vast menu.     I also had the Tostadas (2 corn tostadas topped with black beans, caramelized onions, slow roasted pork carnitas, local heirloom greens, cilantro-lime crema, feta and queso fresco). The pork carnitas literally melts in your mouth and the crispy tostadas provide a nice contrast to the pork.     Every dish that falls into the Latin-Mexican food category for me is Never Blue’s stars including their Taco Truck menu which features eight different tacos at $2.75 a piece.   Never Blue had a brief presence in Asheville this year when they opened a location downtown at 27 Broadway. Never Blue fell to the 27 Broadway curse, which has claimed multiple restaurants including Tingles and Zoe Rose. Although Never Blue did wind up with several Tingles glasses which I find quite funny. Good luck Chef Jesse in tonight’s...

Frank’s NY Deli

Frank’s NY Deli

I’m convinced Frank’s NY Deli is the best deli in town. I stopped by Frank’s yesterday for lunch. I had the Hot Roast Beef & Provolone Cheese Melt with roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, banana peppers, slaw, and horseradish. This sandwich is stacked with flavor and probably with the addition of a side fit for two. Frank’s homemade sides are killer and the macaroni salad is my personal favorite.   Frank’s use to be located at a hole in the wall on Sweeten Creek Rd., but the new location on Hendersonville Rd. is very swanky compared to their previous digs....

White Duck Taco Shop

Rolled in at the right time on Saturday to the White Duck Taco Shop. By the time we left the line was out the door.   The chips and queso are a must. You get a pretty hearty dose of queso versus other places that serve it to you in a tiny cup, not to mention the queso is on point.   I had the Fish taco and the local BBQ Carnitas taco. The fish taco is a winner. I like White Duck’s fish taco because the fish is blackened versus fried and it is hard to find a fish taco in Asheville where the fish is not fried. The BBQ Carnitas Taco was ok; I guess barbecue on a corn shell is not my thing.  But everything else I have tried at White Duck Taco has been great including the Bangkok Shrimp, Buffalo Chicken, and the Thai Peanut Chicken.   My only wish is they served their tacos on flour tortillas. I know that comment may knock me down a few rungs on the food ladder of critics, but I don’t care. I love my flour tortillas. ********************************************************************************************************************** 5:30 PM White Duck Taco has informed they do have flour tortillas. Sorry for my mistake. And my trips to White Duck Taco in the future just became more awesome!      ...
